There was a BBC program about spiders a year or two ago and I remember being surprised, when they mentioned that the Daddy Long Legs, usually got the better of the House Spider. I found this Daddy Long Legs in my hallway this morning, and it certainly has got the better of the House Spider.
To me, Daddy Longlegs are crane flies. https://www.amentsoc.org/insects/glossary/terms/daddy-long-legs Seems I'm not alone! The spider you're describing are just spiders to me.
Daddy Long Legs were always Crane Flies to me and the above spider was a Cellar Spider; but they are frequently referred to as Daddy Long Leg Spiders. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pholcidae
Now that all makes sense. I was wondering how a Crane Fly could beat a spider. Have never heard the term Cellar Spider, but I have now.
I think of them as ceiling spiders. They don't seem to mind being upstairs so long as they have a corner they can make a web in and hang from. They are a rare sight up here but really common down south.
Don't know about swimming pools, but my dad sometime had to wear wellies when he in went into ours for a shovel full of coal.
