Well this was strange. We were about to watch The Great british Bakeoff an extra slice which had been recorded to the Sky box. It asked for our PIN no which we had forgotten. Tried 3 times and got locked out of the programme.

Also recorded and that I have not finished watching was the documentary on Robert Mapplethorpe. PIN not required funnily enough so we put it on and there on the screen was Robert with a bull whip stuck up his bum.
I wonder how they decide which is of an adult nature and is PIN protected?

Mapplethorpe did not have a soggy bottom, or male soggy counter-part for that matter. As for the bull whip; I know he photograph to which you refer. I challenge Roger H to get that one on his column in AP.

Yes. It has followed the dough and moved to Channel 4. I'm not watching it. Not because I don't like Channel 4 but because I've never watched it and don't see the point now.

I know the Mapplethorpe image you are referring to. I may have mentioned it here before. I was being given some very odd looks by a bloke on the subway one morning and so I decided that if he wanted to stare at something, I'd give him something to really cause him consternation. I pulled out my notes on RM, complete with reproduction fo that image and made sure he got an eyeful.

No idea what could be so offensive about baking that would make it more squirmy than Mapplethorpe though!

Nige wasn't talking about the main show, he was talking about the after-show catch-up thing which probably airs after the watershed.

The Sky PIN system means if you watch recorded post-watershed shows before the watershed, then the PIN activates, if you watch them after it, the PIN doesn't activate.

It's possible that Nige was watching the documentary after the watershed (and so no PIN required), it's also possible it originally aired before the watershed, in which case no PIN ever required.

Maybe Jo Brands comments were deemed risque`, or could be something about photos surfacing of Hollywood going to a fancy dress party years ago dressed as one of the Nazi officers fron Allo Allo? Could anyone really take that seriously?

Why would I want to? I choose only pictures I like. If I were to use any Mapplethorpe it would probably be a nude or a flower study. But I probably wouldn't anyway. I'd be astonished if his estate didn't want a LOT of money to use it: more than I would want to spend even if the magazine told me we could afford it. Again, why wouldn't they? I could almost certainly get several pictures I like better for the same money or less; indeed, for nothing, which is what we normally pay for pictures. Everyone knows about that picture, so I'd hardly be doing him any good -- and besides, if I were going to use images people would consider "obscene" I can think of photographers whose work I prefer. Laurent Benaim, for example (Google him if you dare). I don't like all Laurent's stuff, but some is very good -- especially when seen as large format gum bichromates instead of in repro.

Because I'm on holiday and currently taking a break from building my ark (they laughed when I said I was taking a two week holiday to build an ark - who's laughing now, eh?) I decided to carry out a Google image search of Laurent Benaim. My reactions were as follows:

    "I don't like that lady's glasses...wait...they're not glasses! They're todgers!"

"Ah, here's a nice picture of two naked ladies...wait...that's not a....she's got a todger!"

"The lady in this picture looks very thin, I'm glad she's having something to eat...wait...that's not a jumbo sausage...it's a todger!"

I now understand everything that I've been told about developing a distinctive style and creating a 'body of work'.

    Cheers, Jeff

I know, but I was being sarcastic about it moving to channel 4.

    Dear Jeff,

Yes, he is an interesting photographer, isn't he? Hard-core pornography in large format gum bichromate -- or possibly sometimes bum gichromate. Nice guy, though.

No it was within minutes of not being able to watch GBBO extra slice. Got locked out so tried something else of which it was the Mapplethorpe doc, so both around 2000hrs and before the watershed. Obviously Jo Brand is more offensive then RM's front and back bits. There were also erections and more or less oral sex. Strange really.

That was the 3rd attempt that locked me out, so had obviously changed it at some point. Easy to change online though. 0000 not going to forget that.
