    ... what would you do?

I hope you had a great Christmas and here's the first poll question for 2016

If your camera manufacturer stopped making cameras, what would you do? Please take time and vote on the poll, thank you.

It won't. One reason why I would never buy a Sony, though.

No big deal. I'd just get something else.

Both Leica and Nikon going out of business? Not very likely. And that's just in 24x36mm...

    Cheers,

OK who is the rumour about? Probably Samsung.

As to the question I am not on a constant upgrade path and I would just carry on until something became unrepairable and would then consider my options.

It was no problem when it happened to me (Minolta) I just moved on to something else when it was time to upgrade.

I have Sony and some Nikon. Well I doubt that Nikon would stop producing cameras, so that is not really an issue. Sony, more likely, my A850 should last for a long time, I would either sell it and the rest of the kit and go over wholly to Nikon, or just keep using it till it gave up, so long as batteries are available that is.

Samsung were mentioned, it is pretty clear they are making a phased withdrawal from the camera market. Sony manufacture sensors for others anyway, so perhaps that factor would make a similar move less likely.

Seems a bit of mean Christmas poll question to ask in the light of Samsung pulling out of the UK market.

My betting would be on Nikon packing it all in before Sony. The new big two are Canon and Sony. Nikon will probably be around longer than I am. To any youngster starting out I would say go Canon.

It wouldn't bother me, my best kit is transferable.

What would I do? Not worry too much as the second hand market would see me fine for some years yet.

I think Nikon going out of business is perfectly plausible.

ANYONE going out of business is plausible and indeed likely.

    The timescale is the question.

Reading that, my thought was that the best piece of kit the photographer has is his or her 'eye' for the photograph.

I'm still using my Minolta gear.

If Nikon were to pack up tomorrow, I reckon it'd be a good ten years before I felt the loss. I've got enough megapixels to cover prints larger than I've ever printed, long lens, wide lens, fast lens, slow lens, and flashes that either sit on top or work wirelessly.

Good answer. On the other hand I'd not necessarily want to have to learn a new system, especially one with a surfeit of buttons. Maybe I'd just stick with whatever I have that works, until it stops working. Alpa, De Vere, Gandolfi, Graflex, Kowa, Leica, Linhof, Nikon, Polaroid, Toho, Voigtländer, Zeiss...

    Cheers,

    You have me worried.

Does anyone think there's a chance of Ensign, Werra and German Voigtlaender going out of business?

I have basic bodies from Nikon, Pentax and Sony. My best kit is the lenses, which happen to be manual focus, so I can mount them on mirrorless systems. Even if Sony stop making E-mount, I'll have several alternatives available, plus use on their native systems.

My pinhole and toy cameras aren't 'system' specific either.

True, but I'm rarely that profound!
