So despite me not liking flash galleries I found that lightroom has some of the nicer galleries built in. So I thought I'd have a play with 35 (there's a couple of repeats so 33 unique pictures then) images scanned from the old BullRing shopping centre in Birmingham.

The flash gallery is about 2.5mb but should be fairly fast to download on broadband. Tis only a test at the moment.

Images shot on Ilford fp4 plus iso125 using my Eos 50E and an EF28-105 lens

good set of "nostalgia" images there. No doubt historians of the future will be pleased with your work :D

I am not too keen on the navigation of the gallery, I kind of got lost as I moved around using the up, down, left, right. The gallery loads very quickly on my connection ( usually near to 6 or 7Mb at this time of the day, bit slower in the evening !). I like the pictures, a good record of what was 'wrong' with the old Bull Ring. If you could go back to when it was built and look at the curves of the walk ways etc. it must have be an interesting environment, shame it was location made it a traffic island. I often think that 'bad architecture' is actually bad maintenance and a reflection of society not been as utopian as the 50's planners had hoped.

Really good set of images there, the first ten or so are the best and then it gets a little repetitive. The flash gallery isn't too bad either.

I'm from Brum (based in SE now) and vaguely remember the old bull ring (26 now). Would be interesting to see it in it's heyday.

    Nice little series.
It didn't find the navigation a problem, just clicked the first image and kept pressing spacebar to move through the images.
Loaded quickly and has a smoothness between images.

I'm also from Birmingham, I'm suprised at how few people there are in the shots. Great tones, but fp4 is such a reliable film.

Reminds me of Sunday mornings around there when I was a student (and trying to walk off the excesses of the night before!) - it was always very quiet then.

    Thanks for the comments.

As for it being quiet, they were taken on a Sunday morning just before they closed it completely. Looking at some old maps I did miss quite a few things (concentrated too much on the Rotunda) like the entrance to the underground car parks and round kiosks around the Ship ashore (outrigger) pub.

Great work! I also grew up in Brum and the pictures brought back some old childhood memories!

I've created a none flash version of the gallery. This time I've added a few images from the reconstruction of the Bullring (still has 48 thumbnails to load, so please be patient!)

I'm not a fan of the bullring but the photos have made me realise what an improvement the current version is.

I had a look round your site and there's some good stuff there with simple navigation, well done.

Sadly I've not got any shots of that. It's part of the area that I didn't document.

    Gallery update

A while back I decided to do a before and after gallery of the Bullring.

    Finally I've finished it.

    Old / New Gallery

When each image opens you have a prev/next button to select the old/new image. All the new images are taken to as close as possible as the original.

Also included at the bottom of the page is a slideshow of the same images (just saves you clicking!)

Thanks to the Bullring Management for allowing me to shoot inside the centre. Also thanks to Birmingham City Council for getting me some before and after maps, which helped a great deal in pinpointing the locations I'd shot from before.

(also let me know if its really bad on IE, not had change to test it tonight!)

    Re: Gallery update

I know the text at the top displays odd on IE, other than that it seems to be fine .
