I see from my summary that I've posted here around 9000 times, and from somewhere seem to have acquired a number of likes. Is that a counter I can control? Can I set it to "0"? As I understand it, a "Like" is a Facebook invention and I do not wish to have anything to do with Facebook. Any ideas?

It's simply part of the forum software, nothing you can do about it.

Just because a "Like" button is a Facebook invention, or appears to be, doesn't mean that a "Like" button on the AP site has any connection with or to Facebook. See it as a sign of appreciation.

I see it as a sign that I'm pleasing some people. Balances the unpleasantness from a very tiny minority.

I store them up like pirate gold and covet them in the cold, dark reaches of the night!

    Cheers, Jeff

PS - not really, however I do use them when I either agree with, or approve of something posted.

I've still got some Green Shield stamps! A whole role of them from the days long ago when we had a petrol station.

    Different but similar point.

There used to be a way of rating a whole thread by giving it stars. I wanted to rate the recent one one about planes in flight and shutter speed as being especially useful, but I couldn't find a way to do it. Has this been removed or have I missed something?

Different forum software, I don't think this version has that feature.

It's nothing to do with Facebook in this instance.

Also, Facebook didn't have it first, FriendFeed did (before FB acquired FriendFeed). I can't prove it, with 48 seconds of research, but I'm pretty sure there were concepts before FriendFeed for showing approval of content without having to write anything. It's where the +1 emoticon comes from, for a start.

I don't think there's any way to disable them on an individual basis.

    Dear Malcolm,

Of course you could try being so boring that no-one ever likes what you read...

Merely being unpleasant probably wouldn't suffice because there might be others who like unpleasantness.

    Cheers,

    R.

The trouble is that he already has 187 "Likes" so no matter how boring his future posts the count wouldn't go back to zero.

As far as I can make out, it appears to be a loyalty card where you don't have to be loyal to one particular place. o_O Though Sainsbury's are trying to change that...
