    Dear Andy,

Apart from the fact that it tastes vile, yes. I'd put several (?most) oils above it, starting with corn, peanut and olive, not necessarily in that order.

    Cheers,

    R.

    Dear Kate,

Really? There's not much I'd die for. My wife; my daughter; HH Dalai Lama. Depression, maybe, one day. Foodstuffs, not so much.

    Cheers,

    R.

Which gods? None of the ones I know. Except perhaps Hoki.

You see Roger it's like this, if everyone knew which Gods liked mushy peas (may they bring you eternal infernal wind) then they would leave their Gods by the wayside.
As much as Ambrosia(creamed rice) and Nectar(points) may be the food and drink of many a common or garden God, only the truly righteous ones know which side their slice of bread is buttered and how it sits in relation to their pot of tea.

    Dear David,

Nah... I'll go for Lugh (a local lad, despite Irish claims), Apollo (I like sunshine) and Bacchus (hic!) every time. Or, on a higher plane, Chenrezigs.

    Cheers,

    R.

Mrs Craig had a similar Faux Pas with turkey stock once. After simmering the carcass for several hours she had a large pan full of the broth. Then promptly poured the lot through a sieve down the sink!
We were left with a pile of bones!
Note to self. Make sure you have a pan under the sieve next time!
    True story!

We used to have a famous faggot and pea shop here in Birmingham in the 50s but that's another story...Roger must have been there!

Further to my post the best pea soup I ever had was in Great Yarmouth, where I bumped into Tony Hateley a great F/Ball center forward from the 60s...

Wasn't he the lead singer for Spandau Ballet? :)

No that was Ron Headley who played cricket before he took up singing.
Remember their great hit Bowled but everyone thought he was singing Gold...

    Dear Craig,

Been there, done that (though fortunately not often).

    Cheers,

I always triple cook my chips at home. Okay, boiling the chips is a pain, but the result is well worth the effort.

I use Groundnut oil, which has a hight catch point and little if any after taste. Quite expensive to fill up the deep fat fryer, but an easy oil to keep clean.
