First ever picture taken on a SLR camera, only had a 'proper' camera for 1 day so am definitely new to this! Other than the image not being straight how could I improve this photo?
    Thanks :)

I have seen a lot worse. Possibly include the feet, the boots look slightly odd cut off. Not being straight looks more down to the camera angle rather than it not being level.

It looks like a good start.
Why the size is so small and why there are no EXIF information on Photobucket?

The image is not bad, but (I will speak subjectively, only about the weaknesses):

    • the framing is too tight - I think it needs a little more space upside too, not only on the right side, as it was already said.
    • I'm not sure, it might be my screen's fault, but the subject looks slightly overexposed. This might be because of the dark background, the metering system of the camera was fooled by it. As I see the picture now, I think -1/3 exposure compensation would have helped.
    • the background (the bush) is too close, and not only that has influenced exposure, but it can't be separated from subject and is kind of distracting.
I think that there is not much left to improve, but you have potential and I am sure that you will came out in no time with better ones:)

    Have good light!

Thankyou so much for the fab cc! This forum is deifnitely ALOT nicer than I expected!!
Getting my camera, photobucket and this forum account all in one day has left me with lots of learning (hence small picture size!)

There seems to be something very very wrong with this picture!!

Every other first shot I've seen (or taken) was of a desk or a pet....

Please try again with a more appropriate subject :D

Not bad for a first attempt. Yes, the feet are cut off, but at least the background.is nicely subdued, and the lighting isn't too harsh.

Haha, I was so tempted to just shoot anything (I think pot plant was closest at the time!) but instead I made my little sister come to the park and be my model!

Hi if you have done something like cut bits off, just look and see if the aspect ratio can work another way. If you cut more off, it doesn't look like a mistake. The head is just a bit too high so this is not a complete solution, but it helps. The gap under the bench is a bit spare so can come off. As I said this is not an ideal aspect ratio, but any more should be on the top, not bottom.

    Well done.

Phil, stop giving them bad ideas ;)

A fantastic first shot, if you ask me, which you were. Like everyone else says, watch out for cutting body parts off and when you have a horizontal like that bench, try and stand square on to it.

Nice crop Mike! I like the triangular shape you created. Well spotted!
