I have taken a few pictures in Cathedrals in the past but not Durham, I went there 2 years ago but it was closed to visitors! I was very annoyed as I had travelled a long way to be there, I normaly ask permission on the day pay a small fee explain that my camera will be on a tripod and no flash will be used most Cathedrals welcome people to take pictures but flash pictures can be annoying to others so I dont use flash at all.

In the context of tripods in crowded enclosed spaces it seems fairly obvious to me. Many places ban them out of hand; at least this one is inviting you to seek permission and will presumably exercise some judgement about appropriate times and locations, the size of the tripod etc. They may also want to clarify where responsibility will rest if someone falls over your tripod and there is damage or injury.

It would be interesting to know if they do any of that.
