What is the difference between the R series and the M series Leica cameras?

R series are SLRs, M series are rangefinders with the Leica M bayonet mount which replaced the Leica screw mount. As far as I know, only Leitz lenses will fit the SLR R series, bur now Konica RF Hexar and Voigtlander Bessa T rangefinder cameras have the M-mount, and the Voigtlander Bessa B has the Leica screw mount. These screw mount lenses can be fitted to an M mount camera with a simple adaptor.

Don't believe a word that Clive tells you Diane. The R stands for Really Awful and the M stands for whatever the German is for Crap, (Muchencrappen or something like that I think)
Aw c'mon Diane, Would I lie to you?

M stands for Müll. German for rubish.

R stands for Raum. German for room.

Put them togather and you have Müllraum.

And I have one of these in the Untergeschoss. It is very big. Bit like the the cameras.

R stands for Rich which although not essential, is helpfull if you want to buy one.
M stands for Millionaire which is absolutely essential if you want to collect the M series.

P stands for piss off which is probably what Clive and Brian are about to tell me to when they read this.

    La Paz, Monday evening
    Sundance, Where are you?
This is a note from Bolivia - not quite what we expected. Lost BigWill on the way here. What's all this about R&M? Anyway, now we are Rich Millionnaires we can afford to buy a Canon Gas Fire 'cos it's bloody cold here. Anyway, having a sodding awful time - wish you were here.

Sorry Butch had to get rid of the posse. Now where are all these Canon critters? I'm ready to take them out Butch. What do you reckon? I guess about 1/250th at f5.6.

    Sundance.

P.S. I'm going to shoot both of them where it really hurts, always knew that Macro Elmarit would come in handy.

Waddaya mean F5.6, you low down, Leica slingin' layabouts? Nothing slower than f0.95 will get you anywhere near us Canon boys, even without Big Will.
Gotta give the Big Lad credit though, he's a fighter alright. He's responding well to the I/V Bushmills. Could be back in action before sundown then you Leica boys are gonna get it, just you wait 'n' see

    Canon(you've been warned)ball

Bye the way, Don't yer mean S&M?

Had a Canon f0.95 lense once, used it for burning holes in butterfly wings, about the only thing it was good for. But Geoff let that be a warning to you, thats the sort of ruthless people you're up against. Come on punk make my day. Mind you, I suppose if I mentioned slapping leather Will might have a relapse.

    Brian.

Geoff should'nt you be in bed?

    Will,

Is this how you repay all the kindness and generosity which you have received from the Leica lads. Well it's certainly churlish and decidedly ill mannered, the abject behaviour of an utter cad. Therefore we would ask that you remove your loathsome person forthwith. Take that other low life form with you as well. And kindly do not slam the door, you might wake Clive up.

    Brian.

Aah! you've done it now Will.
Old Clive's cried himself to sleep, and now Brian's spit his dummy out!
Any idea who he's referring to as low-life?
Who or what ever, It's bloody rich don't you think Will? Talk about the kettle calling the bloody frying pan?
Lets get out of here Will and let those old farts bore themselves stupid.

Let sleeping Clives lie is what I say. He'll only waken up with a snort and launch into one of his diatribes about Canons and then go all misty eyed and start waxing lyrical about his Nikon again. No, best to play something soothing by Bach and let him drift off into oblivion in his bath chair.

Snort...who's playing Air on a G String? Did someone mention the f0.95? Been waiting for that old raspberry to come up for a long time - surprised it took so long. Think I'll throw some ZZZZZZZZZZZs.

Not me, although it was played at my wedding. Couldn't convince them to play Darth Vader's theme (the Imperial March). Rats.

Time to add some fuel to this fire. Why are the R series cameras cheaper than the M series? Do they still make the R series?

  17. Clive

    Clive Well-Known Member

Yes, Diane, current models being the R6.2 and the R8. Not sure of current prices but always thought the two series' prices were similar.

Reckon Diane was talking about some of the older series rangefinder cameras which are regarded as collectable and hence very pricey (strange that the SLR's are'nt! Probably not been in production long enough). Now, if I just hold on to my Lubitel for a couple of years.....

Good news Will, Lubitel prices have started to rocket. I saw one a few weeks back advertised at £25

Thats great news Geoff, why in a couple of hundred years that means it should be worth about oooh £27.50!
