    Just to be pernickity, he wasn't "Major Hirst of the Royal Engineers" throughout. By the beginning of 1947 he had been demobbed and taken on as a civilian employee in the German Section of the British Foreign Ministry. Then he was posted back to Wolfsburg to continue the management of Volkswagen which was still struggling to get on an even keel.
