Bread Makers - just to change the subject.

    Some time ago we had a thread about bread makers. I was one of the few who used mine a lot.
    We have always been happy with the bread it produced.

    Recently, in Costco, I saw a 16kg bag of 'very strong Canadian Bread Flour'. It was cheaper than buying in smaller lots from the supermarket and I thought it would be convenient to have in a stock as we use quite a lot.

    To our surprise the change of flour has transformed our bread for the better. We were happy before but now we are delighted. The loaf is bigger and lighter. The crumb is excellent and (to my Grandsons' delight) it toasts wonderfully. We are extremely happy.

    The point of this post is to recommend this flour to anyone who uses Costco and a breadmaker!!!


    PS And because I'm fed up with Brexit.

    I’ve not used my bread maker for years. Another one of those kitchen appliances that end up just using cupboard space. Perhaps I should start using it again.

    Thanks for the recommendation - I'm still using the Panasonic SD-ZB2502 which I bought at the time, and it's still doing well. What's not so good is that the LIDL wholemeal bread-making flour which I have relied on since then, has disappeared from both of my nearest LIDL shops. I'm suspecting that home bread-making has suffered a drop in popularity, and that LIDL's sales analysis has reacted. Other flours are available, but price-wise they are in a different league, and currently I'm on a search to find a substitute, so your mention of Costco is appreciated.

    If there's no decent baker in a ten mile radius they're slightly better than nothing.

    My wife frequently uses the breadmaker; her formula is 70% wholemeal flour with 30% white. The loaves are superior to the ones from local supermarkets (10-mile round trip, Roger).

    My breadmaker is usually Morrison's in store 'bakery' backed up by a Chorleywood factory making dough.
    The product may not be as good as one might find in a real bakery but it isn't bad.
    Good. Where does your wife get good bread making flour? Most British flour does not have sufficient protein to make real bread. That is why the Chorelywood process is used in bread factories. It allows huge quantities of sub standard bread to be produced for the masses from weak cheap flour.

    Use my Panasonic at least once a week, usually twice.
    Floors vary from occasional all white through wholemeal to assorted seeded types.

    Decent result without having to drive down to town.

    Mobile 'phones with cameras - now cameras with breadmixers; Whatever next?
    My breadmaker is called 'hands', takes about 40 mins to mix and knead.
    Strong wholemeal. 3 x 1 lb. 1 x 2 lb. loaves. Next bake Sunday.
    Do not know where our nearest Costco is. York, perhaps.

    I don't have room for a breadmaker, nor time to make my own bread other than for speical occasions, nor the audience that would appreciate decent bread if it leapt up and slapped them. They all *like* wangy white supermarket bread!

    My wife makes all our bread and has done so for many years. It's wonderful and far better than can be bought. I've no idea of the recipe she's developed or the ingredients except she use two types of flour that come from a small wholefood shop who specialise in such stuff. The machine she uses is a Panasonic SD253 which, although it's no longer made, is apparently THE machine to have.

    I find it interesting that folk should be so divided about such things. I actually wonder whether some have had any real experience with them at all or whether they simply dismiss them on principal. I sometimes think that SWMBO won't accept that a job has been done properly unless it's been done in the hardest possible way - hands and knees scrubbing the kitchen floor for example. She dismisses the various labour saving devices on principal. Maybe bread machines are too easy for some folk although, despite what I've said, she does accept the bread maker!

    My experience is that you have to learn to use the machine properly. Techniques vary (I find that the temperature of the water makes a difference as does the yeast). So throwing in the ingredients and condemning the thing by your first loaf isn't really the answer. Like any machine you need to learn how to use it properly. You , maybe, need to modify the recipe to your liking and your technique. It's a learning curve.

    Even then surprises happen, as in my first post. For some years we have made bread that was enjoyed by the family. We change flour and , lo and behold, we get a bread that's enjoyed even more.

    Every loaf of bread machine dough I've ever had is inferior to GOOD baker's bread, including stuff the machine owner thought was good.

    use my panasonic 2502 every other day and have done for a couple of years now.

    wife has some food intolerances so, like the rest of the cooking we do, like to know what goes into stuff we eat.

    usually do 70% strong canadian whole meal waitrose + strong white or sometimes hovis flour

    far far better than any supermarket c**p and better than any so called artisan bakers round here. of course if we were in france then it would be a different story from what i can remember self catering in gites some years ago

    are we turning into mumsnet?
