It seems impossible to watch TV without coming across an auction in progress. So, why is it that I can easily understand what many auctioneers are saying, but that I'm completely baffled by the livestock auctioneers? (and possibly those auctioning wet fish as well.) Is this because the "general public" aren't expected to bid at livestock auctions?

You're not alone. People even write dissertations on the subject http://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/2936/
