It sounds very much like dust on the sensor, which does tend to become more visible at smaller apertures.

Before you fork out for a professional cleaning job, you might want to consider getting a blower (the Giottos Rocket seems popular, less than a tenner) and having a go yourself. Don't try blowing with your mouth, you might get spit on the sensor and make things worse!
