What you state is exactly true; the D700 takes the identical accessories as the D300 which, IMVHO, is a bonus for D300 users with a hankering for the D700 or a Full-Frame Nikon DSLR.
I say this, because if someone has the D300 (and 8 fps accoutrements) they can interchange them with the D700 until, of course, they want to have the 8fps accoutrements for the D700

Hmmmm, yes, cross compatability is good, but would I want to be swapping grips all the time? Probably not, I'd look to have one on each body. If I didn't have a D300, what would the price dfiference be between the D700 with grip and accessories and the D3?
