Personally I feel that a bit more lenght would be useful. I curently use the Sigma 28-300 and before that the Canon 75-300 USM and really wanted more, I had a cheap 2x converter from Jessops but found uisg it on manual focus with the Canon lens awkward as the front element rotated with the focus ring and was very easy to move as the focus with the 2x on would go well past infinty Autofoucs did work on occasion but was not reliable. With the Sigma I think it would be much easier to use the lens on manual and am thinking about a cheap 1.4x converter if I can find one. About 30 years ago I was using a Vivitar 80-200 with 2x converter on an ME super regularly at airshows and really could have used another 100-150mm did use a 500mm mirror and that was about the right length. I have a 500mm Centon mirror lens wich dose work on my 300D but the contrast is so poor (I think it is flare) that it takes a lot of work in Photoshop to get good results with it.
