I'm Lincolnshire born and bred (not inbred) and typically will fight for my county with any outsider, but love to slate it myself, if you see where I'm heading with this...
I live in a beautiful village (Wellingore) that actually resides on a hill, those that have never visited this limestone escarpement will probably think I'm making this up, but look at my flickr for evidence - not a particularly challenging hill, but a hill nonetheless!
Anyway, I'm in full agreement that Lincolnshire is quiet backwater with poor escape routes to motorways leading to the "smoke", and that the fens are to be avoided at all costs - people have been known to go missing in the 'Boston Triangle'. I feel sorry for that poor soul that lives is Spalding - truly the a*se of the world - except for the excellent Scalextric racing circuit ( knocks spots off Silverstone and easier to get in and especially out of).
Lincoln however, is a fantastic-ish City with a low crime rate, even with the cabbage-picking eastern block sorts that now populate the area adding a "bloody-hell which country am I in" feel to the place (bit like London - only safer!). The Cathedral and Castle area located in the rather proudly named Steep Hill district are very photogenic and some of the restuarants are pretty good too.
The Lincolnshire coast is most definitely the worst stretch of 'seaside' in the British Isles, but visit Donna Nook ( a place not a dodgy woman of ill repute!) in late winter and you will be rewarded with a great photo opportunity with the seal colonies.
Visit Lincolnshire...it's great!
