The 1.4x will have an AF issue too as the 100-400 L is f/5.6 at the tele end.... and I can't see the point of using an extender at all unless you have the trombone extended.

Note that this slows the AF down so much you can probably forget about it for action shots.

However perhaps you could prefocus (manually, or with slow AF) & take the shot as the subject goes through the plane you've focused on.
