Cheap Macro, or what to do with the kit 18-70
      16/01/2008 12:58

Hi, I recently invested in a reversing ring from an ebay source and had a play with various lenses, best results so far are with the kit 18-70; set at 18mm this gives about 4x magnificaton, at 50mm about lifesize 1:1

The reversing ring cost £1.99 plus £2.99 P&P from here

To set the aperture of the lens when reversed I used a lens cap modified as in this "shows you how"

At 18mm the distance from the front of the lens to the subject is short, focusing is critical and DOF very shallow so I also used a focusing rail on the tripod.

However it is macro on a budget, a cheap way to find out if macro is for you. So far I've only done a few test shots of the PC screen, when the weather improves I'll try and find a few specimens in the garden.

Cheers, MIKE
