My 'beercan' works fine on my 7D, OK it doesn't have the ADI capability of modern 'D' lenses but functions perfectly well. As to "effective length of the lens?" it will be the equivalent of a 105 - 315mm taking into account the 1.5 crop factor of the 5D, 7D, Alpha 100 or 700. As to other lenses in your line-up they should all be fine on the DSLRs, there is something in the recesses of the brain that xi (auto-zoom) lenses may loose some functionality, then again I could be talking rubbish.
