EVF NOT FUNCTIONING

Hi,
The EVF on my Dimage A2 no longer functions, I understand that this is a common fault which is being rectified by Sony.
Does anyone know if this is true, and as I was given the camera as a present I do'nt have any receipts or other paperwork for it.Would this be a handicap in getting it fixed.
Appreciate any help.
