The light doesn't actually go through the hood. If the cheap hood fits, is reasonably non-reflective inside and has the same shape as the genuine article (for shielding the lens from glare) it will be fine. If it breaks easier, no big deal, the genuine ones are so dear you could buy half a dozen cheapos & still be quids in pocket.
Lens hoods for zoom lenses are pretty much useless for glare shielding anyway, except at the wide end.
