Canon 24-105mm L Lens Hood advice

I have just bought the above lens off a friend, but came without the lens hood, I thought I would do a quick comparison of prices and found a remarkable difference between a highstreet 'official' canon hoods and a replica from ebay.

I am just wondering if there is actually any difference in image quality between cheap plastic and 'not so cheap' plastic lens hoods....

Image quality, no. Actual quality of the hood itself is another matter. A Canon item is made to fit properly with reasonable quality materials, a substitute item may well not be to the same standards. I did buy a Marumi hood for a Canon 17-85 lens, it was not quite the quality of a Canon item, but it came at a lower price and never caused any problems, I never removed it after fitting. My own view is that Canon hoods are a rip-off, if other companies can include the hood with the lens, why can't Canon? After all it is a piece of moulded plastic, it costs pennies to make.

The light doesn't actually go through the hood. If the cheap hood fits, is reasonably non-reflective inside and has the same shape as the genuine article (for shielding the lens from glare) it will be fine. If it breaks easier, no big deal, the genuine ones are so dear you could buy half a dozen cheapos & still be quids in pocket.

Lens hoods for zoom lenses are pretty much useless for glare shielding anyway, except at the wide end.

The L series do include the hood and a case so I guess the OP's friend has broken/lost the one that should be with the lens.

Sadly they don't extend this sensible approach to the rest of the range - still it must be a boon to the 3rd party makers...

Hi Andred,

I would have picked up a couple of them .. as we sold some aftermarket (replicas)
Canon lens hoods and the one big difference I noticed between the Canon hood
and the aftermarket hood was that build quality and staying on after clicking on
to the lens -- aftermarket was flimsy and never seemed to click in properly.

Maybe its just my copy, but once in place, either pointing forwards or backwards, its very reluctant to move. Possibly a differential temperature thing, it's worse in the cold.

Very frustrating if you see a transient shot and are struggling to get the camera ready!

This has come up before- first of all most Nikkor's come with a hood (as did my Tamron)

The one didn't come with a hood was my secondhand 55-200 so I just went onto Amazon picked the first supplier with a hood that fitted- cost me £7.50- fits really good and is tough- Once again the story of my last birthday was shooting Acid Mother Temple but not initially in the mood went out for a smoke and took my camera off- moments later some drunken idiot staggered out the bar- crashed into the table and ejected my camera and lens from the table hard- lens first into concrete.....

When I'd got my BP and heart rate back to normal (and finished telling the idiot what I thought of him) I picked it up thinking well....replacing a lens hood is cheaper than replacing a lens
