Re: New York
It's nearly 6 years since I went to NYC but I don't recall there being any restrictions on cameras/lenses anywhere except at the airport security places. The Statue of Liberty.... no bags were permitted but there were luggage lockers at $1 where I left my bag and coat. I only had a 3 megapix Canon Powershot at the time so that went with me inside the plinth; the statue itself was closed to people climbing up inside. I took the second boat of the day, it's a round trip to the Statue then Ellis Island and back to Manhattan.
Also there is the Interpid museum of air, space and sea if you wish to see an aircraft carrier and a Concorde from the inside.
Try to catch Times Square at twilight so you get some decent shots of the crowds and advertising lights, plus natural ambience of the buildings.
