    AVG mystery

I normally leave the PC on 24/7 but,out of curiosity `tother day checked the box `shut down computer after running scan`,since AVG 8,some months ago, would not do this.

Now on AVG9 the said box shows unchecked,BUT the PC STILL shuts down after the scheduled scan.
It`s scheduled to run at 11 pm daily.

I`ve tried clicking`default`but it still shuts down.

Any one have any idea how to get it back to the way it was before please?

Try uninstalling and then re-installing AVG?

click computer scanner,at the bottom click Edit scan schedule. Open How to scan, then click additional scan settings. At the top there should be a box to shut the computer down after a scan untick it if there is tick there.

But that is just the point Mike. That box IS unchecked and it still shuts down after the scan.

Will, that would be a last resort.May consider if all else fails. That would be a job for after our hols.

dave no idea if any of this will help searching the web is a minefield, but the big question would appear is it actually completing the scan or shutting down during the scan? which the latter seems most common.

it appears to get quite complicated here a couple of links for you to browse, when you get back off your hols (which you have mentioned in every post for 2 weeks go on then i will ask where you going )

    gogle search

from that search this thread post 9955 links to specific way of unistalling.

generally through searching it appears that it has become corrupt with several post of the same nature

It does complete the scan every time Bob.

Thanks for those links.I`ll do a bit of digging on return.

and since you asked,Lanzarote, but keep it to yourself,I don`t want everyone knowing.

Mike,I tried the AVG forum but forgot my password,so it`ll have to wait.

    Re: AVG mystery

I became so fed up with AVG continually updating their software, which had to replace the old software, which meant downloading, installing then uninstalling the old, that I gave up.

I now have Microsoft Security Essentials, which seems to do everything required, updates itself daily, scans periodically, and I don't have to do anything. Just what I needed.

    Re: AVG mystery

Updating and downloading latest etc. has always been quite straightforward for me Roy.I`ve not had a problem with it.

FWIW,I`ve just asked on their forum, but at the end of the day,it`s not really that important that it shuts down.
It makes no difference in reality.Just a minor inconvenience booting up in the morning.

Never considered the Microsoft one.I`ve always used AVG.Worth bearing in mind though. Thanks

Never had the problem that you had with AVG, but was never very impressed with the full AVG suite.

Both our laptops run paid-for Zonealarm Security Suite - no problems there but ain't the easiest package to deal with sometimes.

On my new netbook I have put free s/w: Avast A/V, Zonealarm Firewall (am a great fan of this firewall - some bad stuff might get in, but it never gets a message out again!) & MalwareBytes antispyware & malware - all working very well, but am very impressed with Avast (recommended by our IT guy at work) as it updates rapidly every time the machine is booted.

Also very impressed with MalwareBytes (also his recommendation), although, with the free version, you have to update it manually before running a scan, and there is no on-access scanning.

Nevertheless would avoid Norton (had a really bad time with their tech support, or lack of it) and MaCaffey like the plague.
