    Padstow

Well, I'm all booked up for Padstow on 30 April and staying in a nice little B&B in Treator up the road. I just hope the weather holds for the Mayday celibrations. Booked into Rick Steins restaurant for one night just to see how good or bad local fish can be in the west country.

Any photographic suggestions for the area would be welcome.

Cornwall - photographic suggestions?! Well , where to start!!

A good place would be what sort of photography do you do? Landscapes, action, animals?

Off the top of my head - Bodmin Moor, coastal views, fishing villages, (Doc Martin was filmed in Port Issac just up the road from you), Tintagel ("one of the birthplaces" of King Arthur!), Fowey, St Ives, tin mining areas of Camborne/Redruth (lots of industrial archeology), I could go on..!

There's also lots of surfing, mountain biking, banger racing, sailing.

Paradise Park near Hayle is a wonderful place for bird and flower photography. You can go in enclosures and feed the birds and get in really close. They also have a 'free flying' bird display of larger parrots and kookaburras!!

Almost forgot about the May Day celebrations in Padstow!! Should be plenty of photography opportunites there too - it gets packed, and there's the very strange Obby Oss...!!!

I used to live in Plymouth but spent a lot of time in Cornwall! PM me if you like and I can give you some specifics! I'm hoping to go down caravanning end of April, but will be leaving as you arrive!

    Have a great time whatever!

Just across the estuary from Padstein (via the little passenger ferry) is Rock (and its near neighbour, Splatt), home of the Sharps Brewery. You should be able to find a damn good pint of Doom Bar in Padstein. A good walk along the coast and dunes can be had there. IIRC Sir John Betjeman was buried near Rock at St. Enodoc's Church in Trebetherick.

That's all very well but what does Ken Rockwell have to say on the matter?

Dolphin and Seal watching in Cardigan bay, though they have been seen within Padstow Harbour. Dylan Thomas's house in Padstow is open to the public.

Sadly, Doom Bar in bottles is (or was - I haven't tried it since) bloody tasteless and watery. Not a patch on the cask version.

    Re: Padstow

It depends how far you may want to travel (cross-country can be fairly slow going).

Bedruthan Steps are pretty good in most conditions, but a tide timetable is essential. (It's a potentially dangerous beach on a rising tide and a stiff climb up/down). At low tide the rocks at Trevorne Bay and off Treyarnon Point are photogenic. Farther north, Tintagel is good, especially if the light is kind, i.e. dramatic.

There are some nice architectural details in Bodmin.

As for seeing the 'Osses, an early start has it's rewards because the event is becoming terribly crowded and moving around after 10/11 am becomes a real chore: planning ahead is really advantageous. The down-side being a lot of hanging around waiting for various things to happen.

Final tip: there's a temptation to carry too much gear on Mayday, such as a couple of cameras and too many lenses, but it the 'rugby-scrum' pace of things can mean there is only time to use one camera/lens effectively.

BTW, Take heart, the weather has been kind for the last few years . . . . .

It a pint of Tribute for me! I do like Doom Bar aswell though if that's the other option.

Cycling the Cornwall C2C last year, I stopped for a pasty and pint of Tribute. Ooh, I'm salivating now!! Luckily I can get it from my local supermarket!

    Re: Padstow

Apart from the beer!! Trevose Head is one of my favourite spots in the UK - I did a post Linky - The whole area is nice, you can easily go down the coast road to Watergate Bay and onto Newquay, head inland to Wadebridge and onto Bodmin, or go over on the ferry to Rock or beyond to Port Isaac and around to Tintagel. Cycle hire is good and then do the River on the Camel Trail – take your camera as lots to see. Cornwall is quite small and once in the area there is lots to do and see...

Just across the estuary from Padstow is Rock (you can take the ferry) then walk the Port Isaac via Port Quin. It's a lovely coastal walk.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys and I've put them in my note book for the trip. I'm really looking forward to this one because I've not been to the SW since I was a kid.

Indeed. After a morning's dive having launched from Rock we watched a pod of dolphins in the estuary close to the harbour. They swam quite close to the boat.

I must take a trip to Oxford soon. I haven't had a pint of Doom in ages and I'm sure there's somewhere in town that sells it.

That certainly will be one of my ports-of-call. As well as some others. In some respects I don't mind if there isn't any Doom Bar. Just any excuse for a trip to the pub for me.

The Bodmin and Wenford Railway is good for some photography. It has some steep gradients, making for plenty of smoke. You can join the train at Boscarne Junction, where it meets the cycle trail. This is close to a vineyard, and also the Dunmere Arms pub which does good carvery meals etc. You can easily get to that pub by hourly bus from Padstow or Wadebridge, then walk down the Camel Trail to the station at Boscarne Junction where you can see the train come in and the engine run round the train to be ready to return up the hill.

Alternatively, join the train at Bodmin General.
