    Hotmail

I tried to set up my Hotmail account on outlook express (not outlook - express).

I got the following error message and have no idea what it means. Any ideas please?

"Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server. Account: 'Hotmail', Server: 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol: HTTPMail, Server Response: 'Forbidden', Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 998, Error Number: 0x800CCC33"

No idea what the error means but you can set Outlook up to get your Hotmail (and GMail etc.) mailbox. I don't think Outlook Express can, it's not clear which you have.

Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry I wasn't clear - I thought that my first line, quoted below, was enough.

Don't know if you've Googled the "error number" or not Mick, but you might find this page useful...

I quick copy and paste of that whole error gives loads of tech help. It seems Microsoft stopped the http port in Outlook express so you need to create a new POP3/SMTP account.

    Thanks Erm,
One of those worked and I'm now in business. Don't know why I didn't find an appropriate link before. There's no way I would have thought of googling the whole error message.

Spoke too soon. I could receive but not send. More Googling has done the trick.

    Re: Hotmail

I thought MS had dropped Outlook Express and were pushing Live Mail as the free email software. I put Live Mail on a net book a couple of weeks ago, it seems quite easy to get Hotmail, and my ISPs email all 'delivered' to the same place.

I have no idea if that's true. I did what I did because I use Outlook (full version Outlook - not express) for my 'real' email. I wanted to get all of my other email addresses into one place and keep them entirely separate from the 'real' stuff. I had Outlook Express (unused) already on my machine- hence the question.

Now I have all of my 'secondary' emails forwarded to the one mailbox and collect everything from that one place.

Yep, Outlook Express has indeed been dropped and replaced by Windows Mail since the introduction of Windows Vista and it also doesn't appear on Windows 7 either.

    Will,
"Yep, Outlook Express has indeed been dropped" - yes, that's right.

"and replaced by Windows Mail since the introduction of Windows Vista", 'fraid not. I really don't know what Mail was about since it was incompatible with Hotmail accounts yet was bundled into Vista. The Home edition anyway. Commercial users would be using full strength Outlook so it has no relevance to them either. It has now vanished and if you have a Hotmail account and don't want to use simple browser access then Live Mail is the Microsoft offering. No doubt third party products are available.

I've been using Live Mail for some time and it is in reality Outlook Express in all but name. It's been improved but an Outlook Express user will be familiar with what they see. You can export / import your emails from OE to LM, no problem.
