Working in photoshop cs4 with a RAW image in adobe camera raw 5.0 I can use the highlight & shadow clipping warnings which turn blown highlights red/shadows blue.
Can you get this function out of the raw editor when just working with jpegs?

I assume that you mean opening, viewing and editing a jpeg in the RAW editor and in which case the answer is 'yes' - John
No, I mean opening and editing a jpeg just using photoshop, not using raw editor.
In which case I don't know. Using the histogram in levels is clearly the best indicator. If you MUST have a clipping warning then opening the jpeg in the RAW converter does the trick. Others may have a way of opening such a facility in CS4 directly but I'm afraid I've not come across it. - John
Hold the Alt key down when dragging the pointers in 'levels'.

Does this just work in levels?
Tried it with image>adjustments>shadows/highlights and it doesn't work - Shame really! I use it with the recovery slider in raw ed when you just have a small area of an image with blown highlights.
Playing around in cs4 and i've found out that I don't even know how to open a jpeg in raw editor, in fact I don't know how to open raw editor. I normally open raw files from windows explorer with a double click and the raw editor window appears within cs4. HELP.
Once you've blown the highlights in a JPEG, the info is gone. It's not like working with a RAW file, where you inherently have some leeway over what you see on the back of the camera.
If the RGB values are 255, 255, 255 or anywhere close - you can't retrieve anything. You can compress the data so that the output levels are off-white, but there'll still be no textural detail.
You can open a JPEG in ACR (RAW editor) via Bridge.

There is an option in 'Preferences - File Handling' to 'Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for JPG Files'. With that selected if you have JPGs associated with CS4 then when you double click a JPG file in Explorer CS4 will open the file in the RAW editor and when doing a 'File - Open' for a JPG file in CS4 the RAW editor will open.Playing around in cs4 and i've found out that I don't even know how to open a jpeg in raw editor, in fact I don't know how to open raw editor. Norman is correct about the option to open jpeg's in ACR, but I find that can be a nuisance if you just want to check a file you have previously processed.
Without setting those preferences, if you go to "File>Open As" and in the box for file types select open as "Raw(Tiff, NeC, CRW,etc), jpeg's or Tiff's should open in ACR.
Incidentally, to avoid going to the File menu, a double click in an empty part of the preview pane will bring up the File Open Dialogue box. Holding down the Alt key while double clicking will cause Open As to be displayed. At least, this works in CS3 and Elements 5 onward.
Hope this helps,
John
Yes helps a lot.
Thanks for the feedback folks. It's been puzzling me for a while - all I needed to do was ask!
