Looks like a major damage limitation exercise is underway. Pity they could not be more specific though

Quite. I got the impression they would have liked to have been.Pity they could not be more specific though
I have to say that the original article didn't give me the impression that all their DSLRs would become mirrorless.
Good. I'm not sure how anyone could have misunderstood what was said!I have to say that the original article didn't give me the impression that all their DSLRs would become mirrorless.
Huh?I have to say that the original article didn't give me the impression that all their DSLRs would become mirrorless.
Speaking exclusively to AP editor Damien Demolder and technical editor Angela Nicholson at the PMA convention in Anaheim, Richard S. Pelkowski explained that the electronic technology in the company's Micro Four Thirds Pen cameras has already surpassed the viewing methods of traditional DSLR models, and that there seems to be no reason to maintain mirrors, ground glass screens, prisms and viewfinder lenses in even the traditionally styled E system SLR cameras.
'I would say that within 24 months the E system will not have a mirror box at all.' Pelkowski said.. .

It's such a nice day to be Eatin' Trifles..........
And I have to say I misunderstood what was written here - too many non-alco beers!Good. I'm not sure how anyone could have misunderstood what was said!I have to say that the original article didn't give me the impression that all their DSLRs would become mirrorless.
I thought you said you couldn't understand how anyone thought the Four Thirds system would disappear in 2 years - which of course it won't. Pelkowski did say that the system would be without mirrors in 2 years, but Terada tells us that it won't happen.
Now, I need a rest![]()
Have you checked whether Richard Pelkowski has collected his P45 yet or not?![]()

If I had all the money I've spent on drink, I'd spend it on drink
I haven't heard that he is gone, and I got an email from him a couple of weeks ago. I do hope he is still employed. A very nice chap.Have you checked whether Richard Pelkowski has collected his P45 yet or not?![]()
The reason Olympus cannot go mirrorless unlike Canon or Panasonic it appears they have not got a very fast working
contrast AF system. I suspect that Pelkowski is indicating that this is a high priority for them to solve and maybe it
will be done in 24 months. Without it they have to stick
with a mirror for phase AF. They are not alone I believe Nikon also don't a fast AF contrast system as well. So the only other play who could enter the 43 mirrorless market by 2012 is Canon. By that time Panasonic's G4 will probably be faster that dSLR phase detection.
I don't accept his excuse that it is lens grouping though because the phase system has to move the same lens for focus
at this time. All you need is the processing and logical to
do that in the same time frame but using a AF contrast system. Hence the problem they cannot get to go fast enough
so one solution is to play around with the lens so the focus
movement is narrower thus gaining valuable ms on focus time.
But that's a sort term solution they have to over come their
technology barrier and fix the AF contrast processing.
I suspect it is because Olympus is not a electronics company
unlike Canon and Panasonic who both have electronic divisions with processor specialists in house.
They waited to move into AF and it seems they are still
paying the price for that today.
I hate to say I told you so. You'll probably need a view finder with at least 12mp image to match the quality of a mirror, I don't think they can make an LCD screen that small with close to that res.

The interesting thing is that all the technology needed to produce a SLR 43 camera from Olympus is currently in the in the E-P2. The only issues is to get the contrast system to focus under 3/10 of sec lag. Cannot be done in 24 months? I find hard to believe. If you look at the press release they say they are not replacing the E-3 range of cameras That does not block them from releasing a new range to compete with the Panasonic G2/G3. Or phasing out a bottom model and putting in a mirrorless while still making high spec mirrored 43 camera as well. They do have 6 model in the range at this time.
