I think the land needs to be quite a bit darker, and to lose the headlights as well. At the moment the lights are rather lost, even in the large picture, and there are too many other things to look at in the foreground.
I'm guessing you used a high ISO (and HDR as well?), as if the event was held with that much light about it would have been a bit pointless...

You'll be amazed at the carp I've posted here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gray1720/
Honestly you have to be much closer for the illumination to mean anything. It is just lights in a landscape, which don't really tell the story. Ideal would be a position where you can see what they are in the foreground and then see them snaking off into the distance.
Thanks for the comments, sort of what I suspected. The event started at 6PM, so it still was quite light.
Here is a second one, almost from the same spot, different setup, and much darker.

Not working at all for me now I'm afraid. Is he signalling the copter???
Hello Mike,
Thanks as always for your critique.
The idea was as the helicopter passed, the beacons would be lit. In a lot of cases simple hand held flares were used as opposed to the gas burning beacons, in the more prominent locations. I suspect cost may have been an issue as well?
Right, difficult to capture then. Pity.
