The sun was flashing across a nearby pond late in afternoon and lighting up the duck so I had another go at it. I prefer the first photo but the water in the second has some superb colours for me.

Agree nice colours but they lack definition. What gear are you using?

I'm sailing like a driftwood on a windy bay.
Second is better for me, but as Will says they are soft. Only way I think the first gets anywhere is to hack off the grot at the back and try to make something of the nice ripple. It does sharpen, but looks photoshopped.

HI Will and Mike
Thanks for commenting. I'm a little lost. What you mean by the pictures "lacking definition" and "looking soft"? I genuinely can't see what you mean as both photos look sharp enough to my eye. What am I missing?
Both were taken on a compact Rollei dk4010. I'm planning on getting a DSLR soon but am trying to improve my picture planning/seeing first.
Thanks.
What I mean by "lack of definition" could best be described in this example as "not being able to make out sharp detail in the bird's plumage". In a photo with good definition every feather should be well defined and the most minute detail in the image should be sharply resolved.......as it is, "definition" is clearly lacking giving an overall "soft" appearance to the image. As these were taken on a compact camera where the optics and image sensor won't have been of the highest standard then this lack of definition is entirely understandable. You'll be amazed at the difference you'll see in definition if and when you eventually get that digital SLR.HI Will and Mike

As Will says, you'd be switching to a much larger sensor and that will make the difference. See here: web page
Hi Mike
Thanks for the link. Plenty to read there.
