    Lumix G1 or FZ38?

    Hi

Am just about ready for something a bit more advanced than a compact after really failing to find a compact that I am truly happy with.

Have looked at The Panasonic G1 and the FZ38 super zoom cameras and, being a complete novice at this level, wondered which is likely to be the better camera for me?

Typical uses are nature/scenery/family and holiday shots with occasional use at rock concerts etc.

All help appreciated as will any other recommendations please?

    Thanks

    Paul

Superzoom cameras are really just compacts with a big lens stuck on the front - the main advantage is that you get a long zoom lens which can get good wildlife shots in good light, in a package which is relatively easy to carry about and not too expensive. However, the light at most rock concerts is unlikely to give good results.

However, the G1 is a system camera which allows you to change lenses to suit the subject in hand, and the sensor is a lot larger than a compact or superzoom, so fundamentatly capable of better image quality in a wider range of light conditions. At the moment the range of lenses is a bit limited compared with DSLRs, but I believe more are likely to be introduced soon. However, by the time you've built up a good collection, it's going to cost a lot more and be harder to carry than the superzoom.

Other options would be other high end superzooms, such as the Fuji S100 or HS10, or an introductory DSLR, such as Canon 1000D, Nikon D3000 / D5000, Olympus E-520, Pentax K-x, or Sony A230. I think perhaps you need to consider the tradeoffs between the convenience and portability of a superzoom versus the flexibility and image quality of an interchangeable lens camera or DSLR.
