Wow, have you done anything to that? Its an amazing shot, it looks slightly surreal... what was the shutter speed? Is the blur really only the birds or have you done something else to it as well, it just looks so surreal how each bird is partly blurred and partly dead sharp, I love it!

As far as I can remember they were all in a state of movement and the light was low as it was late in the day.

Definitely something "not quite right" with this one giving it that "surreal" effect Erm spoke of. What exactly have you done to this in the Gimp.......or is it a trade secret?

Yeah it looks like some kind of smoothing/blurring filter has been applied and then erased to give sharpness to the beaks, eyes, wing tips etc. Whatever it is I do really like it, but I can't say it looks 'natural'. Still beautfiul though.

If did use some filter it might have been the unsharp mask or equalise. I cannot remember using anything called Orton!

I've yet to see unsharp mask or equalise do that - in photoshop anyway! Looks more like a serious dose of noise reduction, then some bits history brushed back.
Not an unpleasant effect on this photo, and applying filters like this can sometimes lift an ordinary shot out of the mundane.

What camera was it taken with?
    Everything's shiny Cap'n
