Not indoor - outdoor will reduce flare - has other advantage that it hits things first - they do cement back together again - my son (yes I hope you read this and remember) landed my 17-40 face down off a table with a 1D mkII (= heavy) attached and the lens hood saved the day.

    Not indoor - outdoor ...
I would suggest that you always have your lens hoods fitted, whether indoors or out (unless you're going to be attaching filters). Of course you're more likely to encounter flare problems outside, but you just might not spot that bright light source indoors when composing your interior shot, and the hood will certainly help there too.

As was mentioned previously, hoods also act as a first line of defence if you have your camera slung over your shoulder and you swing round without thinking; the Canon hoods have more 'give' in them than the Nikon ones, although Dark Siders often make disparaging remarks about the 'flimsy plastic' nature of Canon hoods!

The hood supplied with the EF 24-70 f/2.8L is enormous compared to that supplied with the EF 24-105 f/4L; I can only assume it's to do with the arrangement/alignment of the lens groups within the barrel that requires a different level of flare prevention.

Happy shooting with your new toy - I never regretted spending all that wonga on mine!

Does the 24-70 extend the front element at the wide end? It's been a whilse since I used one but IIRC it's a rather effective hood for a standard zoom due to the way the front element goes backwards as you zoom in. Normally the hood on a standard zoom is setup not to vignette at the wide end so the hood ends up pretty useless at the long end.

Yup, it does extend. Probably not enough to make some kinds of ladies burst out giggling though.
