    NEC Focus on Imaging

    Hi,

Did anyone go? I went on Monday and was dissapointed to see nothing of Pentax there. I asked at the Sigma stand if the new 85mm f/1.4 was going to be issued in Pentax fit and I was told it was, but it would be a couple of months behind Canon and Nikon. Sigma are gloomy about Pentax being around for much longer. Many of the dealers there were similarly downbeat about it all.

I went to look at the Canon stand and it was impressive. virtually every model was there on display fired up so the punters could try them out and they had a special 'range' for trying out the long lenses. All very impressive.

Oh dear, I am nothing but pleased with my K-7, but I am worried about long term supplies of lenses and other kit. If Sigma drop the Pentax mount and Pentax go under there will be no more glass available eventually.

It had me wondering again, was I on board the right ship? The cost of moving now though would need a lottery win.

On the other hand, of course, I have a reasonable range of lenses already and the K-7, K20D combo, so should it matter a drop if the Mark failed. The cameras would still work and I am sure there would be a fair bit of kit, including lenses, available on the s/h market. So it is not all doom and gloom is it?

Someone cheer me up for goodness sake! I feel as though I am about to be exiled to never never land.
    David.

Well I sometimes wonder exactly this, but then I ask myself if my equipment is in any way inadequate for my needs, and the answer is always 'no'. It's easy to feel Pentax is fragile in the face of all the fancy new pro offerings from Canon and Nikon, but if you had a C or N, would you really buy all they offer? Probably not..! I can't afford a D3X or a 600 f/4, so even if Pentax had these it would be of no consequence. From the sound of it monobod you have some very nice kit, why not go out for half an hour with the aim of taking at least one nice image, come back, print it out A3 and look at it close, then ask yourself what you're worrying about? Then post it here and get a second opinion! I sometimes do this and the result is always that I realise my trusty K10D + Tokina 19-35mm (hardly the most modern kit now!) is quite capable of really stunning images.

There, I bet you're feeling better already!

The problem with, and for, Pentax is the long drawn out saga of uncertainty and confusion over the long term ownership that must act as some deterrent to the less experienced camera buyer. Older ones know that Pentax have sailed stormy waters in the past without going under and personally I think this is just another of those episodes.

All that's really required is for Hoya to make some positive statements and actions about Pentax and then follow them through with a greater degree of firm commitment than has been the case with the long running 645D saga...

I was there on Monday and saw an i10 in the flesh, so to speak, for the first time. I've ordered one today from SRS.

I saw masses of pentax bodies and lenses on sale at Jacobs and cameraWorld, and I understand I missed noticing that the 12-24mm lenses were on sale for £399, which is a phenomenal price. If i had seen that I would have bought one.

There's no need to worry about anything other than how to afford a 645D...

.. John, phenomenal, just doesn't cut it as an adjective for price and, truth be told, I don't know what would be appropriate .... but that price is well below our (store) cost
for the lens over here If anyone who saw that price and didn't buy it No emoticon (I have) nor word (I can think of) is appropriate of that
    price .....especially for that lens.

Oh, to have been in England and at FOI this year.

Oh well, I hope lots a people were able to indulge Jacobs/CameraWorld on their offer

    Cheers,

If that price was from Camera World, was it for a refurbished unit, or new?

I don't know, I missed it. I was only told about it later in a way that made me think there were several on offer at that price and they were new.

    Hi,

Yes, cheered up no end now. I did what you said and took some photos with my K-7. Well they are top notch to my eye for sharpness and detail. The composition....well....

I am pretty much suffering from 'fund starvation' so I am glad I didn't see that lens offer too. But I bought some TECCO Pearl Gloss Super and some Lustre Paper (3 packs total 150 sheets of A3). So I am looking forward to some quality prints.
