has any one got the new IS version, if so what do they think of it, or have owned both the old and the new and what their thoughts are.
is the IS a real advantage, for example if it was bugs and flies etc would the IS kick in quick enough to be of benefit

I haven't tried the new IS 100mm but I have been paying attention to (bits of some) reviews and seeing lots of pictures. Whether or not IS is any use will depend on the situation and subject but I expect it will be handy sometimes. It sounds like the IS 100mm has a smoother focus ring so even on a tripod it sounds like a nicer lens to use (the focus ring on the old 100mm is too highly geared and compared to other macro lenses I've used it can be fiddly when trying to focus accurately). I haven't noticed any pincushion distortion in beastie pics which, other than money, seems to be the price you pay for the IS version.

Do they hire out MP-Es too?

My 100mm hasn't seen anywhere near as much use as my MP-E. Most of the things I find are smaller than my sensor though

If you are considering hiring, Lensesforhire have MPE and the 100mm IS and I recommend them.

It's a shame they don't have flashguns on hire as well (looked on their site but didn't see any mention of them) since if you do rent the MPE good lighting is something you will need to get the best experience with it.
