Yeah right. The police just aren't interested in doing anything to maintain public confidence. I wouldn't believe a word a British police officer said and haven't done for years. This "anti-social" claim is just such pathetically obvious lying it makes you realise that they don't care whether you believe them or not.
Yet another example of the widening gap between the police and the real world.

I think this is always going to be a contentious issue.Whether we like it or not,or whether it's legal or not, some people don't like being photographed and they can't understand why we are taking pictures of them in public.I've recently been taking more street photos and the difference in attitude when i'm using a DSLR against when i'm using a compact is amazing,i simply don't get glared at when i'm using a compact, and i can't give any reason why this is so.It will only take a few people who violently oppose this sort of photography and the Police will have enough ammunition to try and get it banned.

I've seen at least one other Leica user on tv using it in a way that I would take offence to....a bald yank that clicks.

Don't give anyone here the chance to elaborate on why they think the police themselves are antisocial, we'd be here all day.police today refused to elaborate on why they regard as 'antisocial' the taking of photographs in a public street.

Well, these days if you don't have your arms outstretched to take a pic and raise your camera to your eye, it's seen as odd and odd means terrorist according to many police posters, that's what digital photography led us to.I've recently been taking more street photos and the difference in attitude when i'm using a DSLR against when i'm using a compact is amazing,i simply don't get glared at when i'm using a compact, and i can't give any reason why this is so.

I'm shocked this is really scary, the police quite clearly has a hiden agenda to drive photography off the streets. In making up thier own laws and arresting innocent people on made up charges they are acting like the SS.
My heart goes out to the man detained ...imagine, in a cell for 8 hours.
To cap it all the Lancashire Police support thier officers actions.

Perhaps we should carry a small compact in a never ready case (minus the front of the case) on our chest with a neck strap. A wireless remote in the pocket and we are all set. If the lynch mob realise what we are doing then we are at least being sufficiently public spirited as to provide the mechanism of our strangulation by means of the neck strap.

No such thing - They have been given certain powers, don't know how or when to used them and don't like their authority challenged. Personally I believe it to be something amiss with the current British phyche. The entire nation, with a few exceptions, is uptight about everything. It's almost a state of mass mental illness in my opinion. But they are uptight about all the wrong things and I'd suggest this is media induced.I think this is always going to be a contentious issue.Whether we like it or not,or whether it's legal or not, some people don't like being photographed and they can't understand why we are taking pictures of them in public.I've recently been taking more street photos and the difference in attitude when i'm using a DSLR against when i'm using a compact is amazing,i simply don't get glared at when i'm using a compact, and i can't give any reason why this is so.It will only take a few people who violently oppose this sort of photography and the Police will have enough ammunition to try and get it banned.

Pfffft, I'm not going to that much effort. I'll just hold my 8MP Sony Ericsson up to the side of my head and discreetly press the button with my thumb.Perhaps we should carry a small compact in a never ready case (minus the front of the case) on our chest with a neck strap. The worst of it is the police can justify their stance on this. The peoples princess killed by the paps, our lorded celebs hounded by the paps, the paedo paranoia. All tosh yes but tell that to the great British public who to a great extent report the togs to the police in the first place. Train spotters plane spotters weird, photographers vile creatures especially the ones with the big cameras.

Yeah, I saw him. With a big off-camera flash and he would get in really close. I think most people would have been too shocked to have done anything. But it was US and if he caused a person to have a heart attack or something he's bound to be suedI've seen at least one other Leica user on tv using it in a way that I would take offence to....a bald yank that clicks.
