    Gamma

    Hi all
having to reinstall the PC after a disastrous XP crash. Naturally this will involve a monitor recalibration. However because this hasn't been done for a while and due to my fading memory I have forgotten one thing: for a typical 7 year old Dell TFT LCD monitor, what should be the gamma be, 1.8 or 2.2?

    many thanks

With Windows, it is normally 2.2

With any system the gamma should be 2.2.

Does this mean that jpegs look different on Mac compared to similarly set up PCs, or are there compensations elsewhere in the data stream to the monitor? Puzzled, as always... where Macs vs PCs are concerned.

They do if the Mac is set at a gamma of 1.8 (they look brighter), but most users as far as I can gather now set a 2.2 gamma.

The default gamma of Snow Leopard is 2.2 also.

That's changed then. We always had to set stuff at 1.8. Good to see they've moved on

Macs for a long time defaulted to 1.8 which was a legacy thing related to an early Apple monitor and has been incorrect for years. Apple have finally stopped this for the most recent versions of OSX. Monitors have been natively close to 2.2 gamma for years and years.
