Borderless Printing

Does borderless printing make your printer smudgy with ink? I fancy trying it but don't particularly want to have streaks of ink all over the printers guts which I then have to mop up.

I've been using borderless printing since getting my Epson R220 some years ago. I only use it for A4 photo quality printing and I've not noticed any problems. I do like the effect.

If I try to get it on A5 sheets (i.e A4 cut in half by me, and where obviously it would make more sense) the printer doesn't allow it, and I get a thin white border around my A5 prints. I think it does borderless A6 prints, and my guess is that it only allows borderless where Epson supply paper in that size. I also use the same printer for printing on CDs and DVDs, and these are effectively borderless.

Where I do get problems occasionally with surplus ink, is when printing envelopes and a flap sticks up.

Hi Malcolm and thanks for the info.

I was given a couple of frames for Christmas, which take A4 and show all of the paper hence my curiosity. I had heard it might be a problem with ink smudging.

I've never tried it before and if I've wanted "borderless" until now, I have simply cut the edges and stuck onto some drayler board. I will give it a go and see how it turns out

I've tried to create boarderless prints for *!@@*! ages on my Canon i9950, but it kept saying that the image would be cropped and distorted. I also ended up with ink clogging and it was just a mess. After about 50 attempts and a lot of swearing I used a professional digital printers.

I really liked the idea of producing my own prints at home but it was such a nightmare that I just wanted someone else to sort it. I've got to admit they did a brilliant job and I get them to do most of my printing now. Unless it's something that my Canon can cope with. I know it costs more but seriously, the amount of money I chucked at ink and paper when trying to do it at home! I'm probably saving a fortune in the long run. I'm sure many of you are much more patient/competent than me but I reckon life's too short!

I've done loads of borderless printing on my Canon printers (s820 and iX4000) and have had no problem with smears on the face of prints, even when going straight from 6x4 borderless to A4 or bigger. When I ask them to do borderless (I always resize to allow for a mm or 2 overhang) they both ask me how much overlap I want to have. If I'm being particularly fussy about it, I resize to the exact dimension I want, print on larger paper then cut the sheet down to the image's edge. :meerkat:

I am always amazed at the way my Canon i9950 printer copes with borderless printing and I have no problems. I did originally get some black lines along the edge of the prints but they have now disappeared.
