What the chap said is very true. My first digital camera was a three megapixel compact. Unless I want to make big enlargements, which in truth most of us probably don't, I see very little difference in pictures taken with that camera through all my later ones to my current dSLR. Of course there has been many technical advances through the years, but how many of those advances have actually resulted in superior image quality? Perhaps noise at the highest ISO levels is the only one. Having said that, it unfortunately won't stop me upgrading to the lastest must-have.
I'm not old.....Just older..

I agree with all that but would add IS to the list of things that really have improved achieved image quality. What the chap said is very true. My first digital camera was a three megapixel compact. Incidently I once did a side by side test of A4 prints from a 4Meg compact (Canon G2) against my current 10meg DSLR and I could tell the difference but only just. They just had to invent something like mFT to get me even thinking of spending any more money (and yes I could easily afford a new DSLR)

I liked the comparison with hi-fi buffs. The last time I could hear the difference between hi-fi and a consumer radiogram I only had about sixpence a week pocket money and could afford neither. Now, sixty years later, that I can afford an up-market system it's too late.
I can't agree with you about about IS. VR is far superior. You can see the difference with only a glance at even a four by six.
I meant to include all types of stabilization in my post, I was not trying to push one type over another
