    speedlite 430ex power question

I use one of these as a slave flash. However, I use it with a cheap radio trigger rather than the canon wireless as outside it's more reliable. As as result although I am using it as a slave it actually set as a master on manual and then triggered by the radio.

The prob is at the minute that it goes to sleep after a couple of minutes meaning you take shot, no flash, walk to unit, wake it up, take shot again - pain!

Custom settings allow you to choose a 10 or 60 minute before sleep delay when in slave mode which would be ideal - but it'd not in slave mode!

The other option is to disable power off completely. This would solve it but I then run the risk of leaving it on when finished and it staying on till the batteries go.

Any ideas? And crucially does anyone know what the battery drain is like when on but inactive?

The context is if using for a wedding and leaving on 'permanently' am I going to run into probs during the day? My suspicion is that battery drain is so low that it won't have much bearing on things even if left on but would love someone to confirm....

Does it wake up if you press the Flash Exposure Lock button?

It might if I was linking it with the Canon IR controller (which I do sometimes) but I'm using a cheap radio trigger to get decent consistency outside - so the only 'link' to flash is the 'fire' command sent when you press the shutter - and that doesn't wake it up....

Looks like you will have to experiment to find out how long the set of batteries lasts if you can force the gun to stay on. I have the earlier model and that just has a simple on-off switch and no control over the power saving mode. It goes to sleep very quickly in my perception.

Does it take any of the external battery supplies which Canon made for their flashguns? Years ago I found a Canon Transistor Pack-E on a market stall, and I'd expect you might be lucky on ebay. Don't know whether this would allow mains powering.

(I don't have a 430EX, only some old 550EX and 220EX, so I'm not sure about the compatibility aspects.)
