Thanks Alan! Unfortunately I no longer have an customers in Edinburgh so have no excuse to reason for work to pay for me to visit the city any more.

    Too bad Barney

I've pencilled in the Saturday talk and I might nip along for the lunchtime one, I've heard Robin Gillanders speak before and he's well worth making the effort for, so long as you don't have to change buses!

I'd probably have a look at that, though I'm no real fan of Eggleston. Maybe not your bag but top of my wish list are these three:

    Hoflehner
    Levin
    Kenna

Oh yes please, and with the Arbus on top of the Weston, that means I will have to take 2 whole days off work at different times of the year

You'll take it I'm not enamoured with work at the Mo'

They're all a bit too cold and clinical for me, no, when it comes to photographers I tend to favour the grumpier ones, more in tune with my own character I guess - so its the likes of William Eggleston, Eugene Atget, Walker Evans and Robert Frank for me

For more contemporary photographers then Alec Soth stands out and Joachim Brohm, Thomas Struth, Joel Sternfeld all have their moments

It'd be great to see Atget in Edinburgh.

Edit - his work of course, not him.

I have a gallery day thid coming Friday in London and I know that Irvin Penn is on the list, at the National Portrait Gallery.
Which is rather convienent as he is the subject of my research at the moment, its the platinum stuff I'm keen to see.

Hi Martin - there are only about 4 or 5 platinum prints but they just jump out at you - the tonal range and detail captured is amazing - the skin looks burnished. The exhibition as a whole is mind blowing. I really loved some of Penn's early work where he had backed his sitters into corners - their reactions are all very different! Enjoy!

Thanks Jude I will, i'm doing a major research project on this guy at the moment, so to see his work first hand would be great

The backing into corners thing, provoked different reactions from different people as i'm sure you read.
We have had a student in one of the studios asking for sitters, he got loads, unknown to them he chucked things at them to photograph their reactions! It produce some amazing pictures.
