    Suitable Camera

Im looking for a camera either digital or slr, that has good zoom, as i want to take photographs of cricket matches which would happen quite far away from where i would be so the camera would need a good zoom. so far the only camera i could find that is not wildly expensive is this one

You'll need a decent DSLR and a long lens, 600mm or a 300mm with a teleconverter to get the necessary zoom.

That would be to expensive i need something about 350, i dont want something like pro photographer, just as a hobby. i currently have one 10x optical zoom, it seems ok but just to small. so would 20x be better?

    Re: Suitable Camera

For local cricket matches I have used a 200-400mm zoom mounted on a Canon 20D and this is generally sufficient to more or less fill the frame with the batsman at the crease. For county cricket you might need something longer though as the grounds can be a bit bigger.

Unfortunately long lenses for DSLRs tend not to be cheap but you can control costs a bit by buying secondhand...

Maybe this Olympus might be a good solution?

The Sony you have been looking at gets very good overall reports and has a (35mm equivalent) 28-560mm lens so should be okay for cricket matches. It also seems to have a plethora of other features. Looks a good buy for the money - but the retailer you link to is not the cheapest.

    Re: Suitable Camera

Depends what you intend to do with the pix. If they are for your personal use, or for low res images to be published on a web site, the Sony, or a similar camera, may be good enough. If you want to sell the images it will probably not be, the sensor is too small and the lens far too ambitious to be critically sharp.

If the former, buy secondhand to get within budget, if the latter, save some more pennies and get some better kit as suggested above.

You should be able to find a secondhand Canon 450D (or equivalent Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Samsung, Olympus) and Sigma 100-300 f4 lens secondhand for less than a grand.
