    camera lens

    hi, Ive not long since bought a canon xl1s with a 16x zoom lens but find Ive still got too get pretty close to the subject to get good image. I know you can get a 20x zoom lens but will this make alot of difference,does anybody know how big a lens i could get for my camera thanks

    A 20x lens will not make much difference, cf a 16x; but good field craft will. OTOH if you're trying to compete with Simon King and company, I think you need to put your question to a specialist wildlife/nature video bulletin board.

    What sort of tripod are you using?

    hi malcolm,thanks for your reply Iam useing a light tripod at the moment I think my fieldcraft is ok as I was only 25feet from spotted woodpecker with very little cover at this time of year and not alot further from kingfisher it just looks small through viewfinder but when I get cable to view on tv it might look fine who is simon king[lol]Iwill try a bulletin board as you suggest many thanks paul

    That's pretty impressive. I've rarely seen kingfishers, and my views of green woodpeckers are normally their yellow tail flash as they fly off.

    Have you considered searching for the EF lens adapter for your camera? This would allow use of Canon's range of excellent L tele lenses. The EF 300 f4L and EF 400 f5.6L would raise your magnification by about 4 or 5x over your present level with the kit 5.5-88mm zoom lens.
    Adapter

    The link suggest an effective focal length of ~2,000mm on full frame with a 300mm lens mounted. Wow!!
