    Simple compact camera wth viewfinder

My wife is looking for a small compact digital camera of around 10 Mpixel and with a zoom of x8 but it must have a viewfinder. These values are added as a starting point for selection and are not set in stone.

She gets on far better using a viewfinder in bright light and this is essential.

She would prefer to have a well known make not the cheap unknown cameras found on such sites as Ebay.

    Any suggestions?

    Many thanks.

Very few new digital compacts now come with optical viewfinders, in fact, in the current (Christmas 2009) Jessops catalogue, the is only the Canon Ixus 95is, Canon Ixus 100is (both with 3x zooms)and the Canon G11 (5x zoom but very expensive). There may be others that Jessops do not stock, of course.

Why not have a look for refurbished Canons on eBay (search for Canon shop), where there are usually models in the A500 range (A510, A520, A530, A540, A550, A560, A580, A590) all of which have optical viewfinders and come with either 3x or 4x zoom lenses, at reasonable prices and with full 12 month guarantee. These are good little cameras and take very good pictures.

Finding a decent modern compact camera with an optical viewfinder will be difficult. Finding a modern compact camera with a decent optical viewfinder will be almost impossible. A sad omission I'm afraid.

    It is getting downright impossible!

Can only seem to find older Canons such as the Ixus. This is not good as I can't ever see the lcd displays in the sun. My nokia phone has a better lcd display on a sunny day than my Nikon and that is pretty dire to say the least.

Anybody know of any new models with viewfinder around?

And the optical viewfinders you can get only more or less help you find the middle of the image. Coverage seems to vary between 50 and 80% depending on the degree of zoom selected. The G11 is a sad joke which is a pity because it makes nice snps. Hopefully evfs will help frame a subject but of course will be totally useless for any of the other advantages of proper reflex viewing. In spite of that I think that an evf is the way to go for a true compact camera. Even the best compacts, which take pretty good pictures (e.g S90) are let down by the lack of a viewfinder.
