    Wide angles for Canon

I'm looking for a lens that goes out to 10mm for my Canon 40D. The 17-35 that I used with film cameras was under-used, though not unused, and I don't think I ever wanted to use a shot taken with it for a competition or anything important. So, first thought, - buy a cheapie and regard it as a 'fun' lens.

Second thought - would the quality be poor enough to annoy me?

So, question; has anyone used the Canon, Sigma and Tamron offerings enough to know whether I would see a difference in quality in normal viewing, not high magnification on the test bench, between these and my Canon 17-85IS standard zoom?

Don't think there is a 'cheapie' out there..... going to start at the £300+ (if you go S/H) mark.

    3 lenses come to mind:

    Canon EF-S 10-22mm arround £650

    Sigma DC 10-20mm arround £400

    Tamron 10-24mm Just under $400

There are other lenses arround - but they are more than those listed above.

I've got the sigma 10-20mm 3.5-5.6 on a 40D and love it to bits. It's had a lot more use than I thought it would when I bought it. Picked up mine S/H for £300 with a 6mth warranty.

Although it "only" goes to 11 mm the Tokina AT-X Pro 11-16 f/2.8 has quite a good rep, and apart from some lateral CA got a good review over on Photozone.

I use the Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6, as do a lot of others, and find it capable of very good image quality - certainly the equal of the 17-85mm.

So, first thought, - buy a cheapie and regard it as a 'fun' lens.

TBH I can't think of any cheapies in this sort of focal length. I do have a manual focus cheapie 19mm (Vivitar less than 40 quid) for film and you can certanly see why it's cheap...

If you want to avoid spending serious money then your best bet is to look around for a good used example such as this Sigma at Camtech...

I would also vote for the Sigma 10-20. A good lens at a good price. Build quality and performance excellent at this price.

I also use the the old Sigma 10-20 in Nikon mount. It's good. Remember that there are two new Sigmas. One is an 8 to 16 and the other an f3.5 10-20. I do not intend to upgrade but if I did not own my existing lens then I would be looking at the 8-16.
