i recentley bought the canon f4, after trying it, the sigma and the tamron 70-200 f2.8.
for me, the canon felt better built, smaller in size, lighter and autofocused quicker. all the reviews i'd read praised it's image quality too.
if you need an f2.8 lens though it doesn't fit the bill, and maybe one of the others would be better...?
I've got the Canon F4 non IS version - and it's the sharpest lens I've got. For 70mm I'd pick it over my sigma 24-70 2.8 any day of the week - even a dark and cloudy one!!
The canon build quility and just the feel of the lenses can't be beaten for a 70-200!
Canon for focus and portability as Chris said. I love the lens. It is very sharp and very convenient. It really does the business. I was originally going to buy the 2.8 version but when I compared the weight and size of the two I soon changed my mind![]()

I got rid of a 70-200 Canon just to buy the IS version of the same lens and it is very good. It will also use a 1.4TC and there is no noticeable diminution of the IQ. I am very pleased with it.

I've been using the first version of the Sigma 70-200 EX for quite a few years now. It's actually quite compact for an f2.8 lens, is optically as good as the Canon from f4, and takes a lot of beating. Both are excellent lenses - if you'll sometimes need f2.8, buy the Sigma; if you need IS, buy the Canon.
The Sigma. OK, that's a slightly flippant answer since the Canon lens won't fit any of my bodies! Given your location, I would look at Mifsuds website and see what they have in their 2nd hand stock. The extra stop from the Sigma might also be useful.

Just to complicate things along comes a new OS Sigma.
I have the Sigma, which thankfully the buglars left behind. To me it is almost everthing I'd want in a lens unless I were a pro.

I have the Canon and it's a great lens...nice and sharp...excellent IS...but it is F4. That's OK in some situations but there have been a number of times since I've owned it that I've said "Damn...wish I had F2.8 here".
I'd certainly recommend the lens to anyone who wanted a 70-200mm lens though...it really is very good.
