    Canon G11 Part 4

I've had the camera for a few days now, and I have to say I think it's fantastic! It looks good, feels good, and the picture quality of the limited stuff I've done so far is excellent. I will keep using my Canon A1 and Nikon F80 outfits, but the G11 is the digital answer for me now!

Sorry I have been off the radar, I read your earlier posts with interest! I am really pleased you are happy with the camera. I have been playing and experimenting with various attachments and widgets. The most exciting was that I needed an option to improve the macro performance. While the camera is good at close up, it is at the wide end and you almost end up with the front element touching the object! But I will be good and write a review in the proper section!!!

    Re: Canon G11 Part 4

You will want one of these as well - quick taster... Chinese clone of the full Lensmate (which is made up of 3 parts, known as parts A + B + C).

Basically using part A+C allows you to fit normal 77mm filters to the front of the camera and work at all zoom lengths (so no dark corners due to vignetting) – the aim was to simply add my B+W polarizing filter for bright days and to kill reflections.

This is what happened when I was carried away, got bored and ended up fitting a full set of +1, +2, +3, and +4 dioptre close up filters (so that is a +10 dioptre) to the front of the camera – well they said it would look cr*p, I think they are wrong, nice thing was that it was at 140mm (30.5mm) plus a really good working distance from the object - picture is basically straight out of the camera, so no crop, plus just look at that DOF!!!

I will have to write the article now...

    Re: Canon G11 Part 4

After a lot of looking and emailing back and forward to the dealer, I bought from this place on eBay - just to show another pic, here is something a bit different, this time taken with G11 plus a single +4 dioptre close up lens – I love the way the DOF covers the top plate and extends down onto the engraving on the lens, to do this with my normal macro lens would take a lot of complex stacking. An original "Lensmate" will cost you in excess of $60 for a similar 3 piece combo, the only difference is that it has a 72mm size on the large adaptor (part C) - Note with this adaptor you can either go for a cheaper smaller 58mm solution with the straight tube set (A+B) or use the larger option (A+C) which is 77mm...

Cheers John. That picture is quite excellent - my order is in! I'll keep you informed. As a matter of interest, an office colleague was about to buy a DSLR - then I showed him my G11! I did point out the advantages of the DSLR, but he's now in a serious quandary!

No worries, I am trying to get my head around this lot - I did not quite know what I was getting into with my new little point and shoot. Those lenses should keep me going for a while

Hi Bob, basically your Raynox is a version of an achromat lens – or a multi-element lenses, which compensates for both chromatic and spherical aberrations - the link above lists a whole host of other new and interesting options! Gad talk about lifting the lid on a whole new world – it was far easier with my simple 180mm macro lens and a 1.4 converter - Should be a fun summer!!!

You gave me an idea....stuck the tubes on the TS-E 90mm. Seems to work well

(infinity focus with all the kenko tubes on....it would probably do 1:1 if I moved the focus but I'll try and measure it another day.)

The leather case I ordered from Hong Kong arrived today - excellent quality and rapid service. I can almost see a Canon G11 'club' developing for this excellent little camera and all the bits and pieces which go with it!

    Re: Canon G11 Part 4

I bought one myself about two weeks ago. It is a brilliant camera, better than the G9,and produces excellent images. The low hight/high ISO speed performance is especially good. I'm glad Canon finally listened to me (and others) about overcrowded sensors.

My only concerns so far are that I seem to be pushing buttons that I didn't intend to more than on the G9, and I also worry a little about the rotating screen and how long it will last.

I hardly ever seem to use an SLR now, and somehow doubt that I will be buying another for a while yet.

When I got my G11 I read that John Baker's post that he had obtained a brown leather case on eBay and I bought one too. It's a neat item and the seller sent me additional one, and they don't want it returned, so I have one going spare if anyone wants it - for the price of postage.
