A little help needed if someone dosn't mind

I am uploading images to FlickR prior to posting on here, hoever my file sizes are causing problems.

In Flickr if I select the Large image I appear to be around 120 kb. If I then select the Medium size, the file gets larger aroun 140kb. In selecting Small I am getting file size around 50kb but the image is appearing smaller than everyone elses.
(see Rose like no other (1) as an example)

I am exporting from lightroom images of 1000 x 1000 max at 72dpi in jpeg. These are from raw images.

    Where am I going wrong?

    Hi,

I use flickr links to put my images on here and have fallen foul of this a couple of times. Flickr adds information to an image and if you pick a smaller image size than the one you downloaded, the file size is bigger.

I download all my images at up to 600x600 pxls and around 95k to start with. Then when I pick the largest image size there isn't an issue.

    ^ ^ WSS ^ ^

Flickr adds info to the photo in its conversion to other sizes. To avoid this make the original 600px and <100k to start with as the size of the Original does not change.

If I'm posting an image here, then I use the 'save for web' option or equivalent and resize to 600 on the longest side. This strips off the exif data and helps to keep the file size down.

My Flickr photostream is littered with versions of my photos that I resized and saved specifically for putting on the AP website. But it doesn't matter because I make them all private, so they don't show up for people exploring my Flickr pictures.

    That's a good idea.

All my pictures on Flickr are resized (in PSE) to meet the sizes allowed here (despite me actually posting very few here!) before uploading. They're all set to private too so only people I want to show a tiny, low resolution version of my masterpieces can see them. If I want to share one properly, I'll print it to a suitable size and show them the print.

    Ok,

Following your replies to my question, I have worked out how to export from lightroom at 600 max longest side, but I am still getting file size of 158kb.

How can I control the file size?

Re: A little help needed if someone dosn't mind

In Photoshop when you use the 'Save As' command (File>Save As) and select JPEG (.jpg) you get a dialog box which offers you various levels of 'quality' - which actually equates to the amount of compression applied to the file. The higher the quality number the less compression and the bigger the file. The predicted filesize for the quality setting is shown alongside and you just lower the quality value until the predicted filesize is at or below the forum limit. I'd be most surprised if Lightroom does not offer a similar option.

Also in Photoshop and Elements is a 'Save for Web & Devices' option (File>Save for web...) which allows even finer control over the filesize and previews the image quality. With this you can select a basic quality setting - low, medium etc. - and then fine tune the filesize with a slider control. If Lightroom offers this option it's the best one to use as it's much more accurate with it's filesize predictions. It also strips out most of the EXIF data leaving more room for image information at any compression level...
