Advice on a printer required please.

I have been using a compact HP 375 printer for a few years - prints from compact digital camera. I now have a Canon DSLR and my printer is too old to accept SD HC memory card.
I would like to get a new printer with memory card slots, to use independently from the computer, and would love advice as to the best good quality one to get. I certainly want to print most photos at 6 x 4, with a screen on printer to see as enlarge/crop. From storage aspect another compact printer is best, but I do like option to enlarge to A4 the odd photo - especially of the birds in the garden - to get the best from the DSLR camera.
Thank you for your time/advice. Jac13

Re: Advice on a printer required please.

I've been deliberating over choice of A4 photo printer myself for ages and am still no nearer a decision!

It seems that the more inks a printer has the more it costs to run (makes sense), but if one owns nice equipment which has been saved hard for (in my case 5D MkII + L lenses, etc.) it seems a shame to stint on the end result, i.e. the printed article you can hold in your hand and show your friends and family

Like swanseadave I will probably only be printing 6x4 (actually more likely 7x5 - that's the size I always had when a film user) but the ability to produce a nice A4 print on occasion is also desirable. So far I have narrowed my choices to an Epson P50, an Epson R800 and a Canon Pixma i4700

For the umpteenth time - sorry Dave for using your post like this - has anybody got any sound advice or user experience on the subject of a suitable printer for occasional home use? All the magazines seem to home in on the A3 printers, like the Epson R2880 etc, but have you seen the cost of a full ink set for one of those ... I'm retired and even with my hobby I have to consider the pennies a little bit

    Hey thanks for quick responses.
Sometimes there really are too many products to choose from, but I appreciate the info - and seems not just me taking a while to make a choice - and I agree - cost of ink is definately a consideration - need to be able to afford to use the printer once chosen.

I have an Canon IP4600 which does superb A4 prints but is expensive, very, to run and for anything other than photo printing is poor. My old HP P1000 printer beats it just about everywhere apart from photographic printing using first quality Canon paper and inks. And it's not far behind there.

Im currently using an HP photosmart C4480 all in one printer. It does 6x4, 7x5, 10x8, A4 etc and Ive found the quality of the prints pretty good considering the price of the printer. It does have an LCD screen but is very small so will always be better to use 'with' a PC/Laptop. I printed a few of my own shots and framed them to give as Christmas presents last year and they came out great. No complaints. I suppose it depends how much you want from a printer really. If I was printing to 'sell', I would definitely invest further.
