    D. Accessory - Peli Case 1510

    Peli case 1510 http://www.peliproducts.co.uk/cases/1510.html#

We did a trip to Australia last summer, with two kids under 5 we didn’t want to carry my camera gear in the cabin when we needed bag space for nappies, toys and so on - so in the hold it had to go!

I went for the Peli case initially based on their reputation, and my initial reaction wasn’t love at first sight, the packaging being wrapped in fragile tape didn’t help, but it simply didn’t look big enough!

But after that initial hiccup I’ve well chuffed! The case is solid, well put together and feels ‘tough’, including the exposed external items; hinges and clamps.

    I brought the optional divider kit at the same time, and it happy segregated and swallowed the following;
    • eos 40d with battery grip
    • ef L 70-200 f2.8
    • ef L 300 4f
    • ef L 24-105 f4
    • ef 50mm f1.8
    • ef-s 60mm f2.8 macro
    • Sigma 10-22 f4-f5.6
    • 1.4 extender
    • 580ex speedlight
    • ST-2E flash remote
    • Caon remote release
    • 77mm polariser, corkin ND filter kit
    • spare AA batteries, rocket blower, and few odds and sods
    • batter charger and cable

And since buying it I’ve added a sigma 30mm f1.4 and that fits in as well!

Heathrow to Sydney, Brisbane (budget airline!), Perth, Sydney and back home! including two taxis, three trailed airport transfers and 4 hire cars - and not even a scuff mark on the case and nor a hint of any movement of the equipment.

Moving in around, it has wheels on the base and an extendable handle, on smooth surfaces it rolls easily and handles bumpy ground without too much bother.

Where needed there are two carrying handles, top and side, which are well padded with comfortable rubber – even with this load it can be man handled comfortably.

I looked at the additional lid organiser, but it when it arrived it simply didn’t seam worthwhile and I didn’t fitting self tapping screws into the lid and potentially losing some if its IP rating.

Now its home is a safe storage area for my equipment and I can use it to happily transport it all around in the boot of my car or other airline trips.

    Highly recommended by me

    Tony

ps – I even managed to use everything expect the macro lens!

pps – batteries do not hold their charge after 23 hrs in a plane hold !

    Thanks for posting.

I've often wondered how good these things are, and with air travel getting yet more bogged down with security, it's probably the way to go.

How secure did you feel with respect to the lock on the case? Is it built-in or a padlock type?

    ----

I've got one comment from my own experience using wheeled transport (a granny shopping trolley) to get my EF 300 f2.8L (Original model, and in its original Canon padded trunk) from car boot to hide, over rough ground - the calibration of the AF took a hammering, and the lens now seriously front focuses. (Correctable on my 1D MkIII but that's the only body I have with AF MicroAdjust) I now carry my USM lenses everywhere in a back-pack to guard against this problem.

Peli can supply a padlock, but I just fitted my own through the holes provided - they are through flanges that are reasonably thick and well supported, it would certainly deter the casual thief.

As for lens being damage in transport from vibration - I suppose there is always a risk of damage to the mechanism.

    These cases are excellent.
Tough as old boots and well thought out.
I've got a couple of them plus a couple of other sizes, and the only drawback I have come across is that it's often difficult to get any other colour than black. (Some places list them, but never have them!)

    Accessory - Peli Case

I have just inherited a Peli 1550 to add to my other tough 'expedition kit'; however, it doesn't have any inserts ...

I have used the regular "pluck-out" foams previously, but they are not (easily) re-configurable, though they can be made to hold gear snugly . . at the expense of some wasted space.

I'd appreciate any comments on the Peli Padded Dividers ( link) insert system.

    Thanks,

    "Namdam" or somethink,

    Re: Accessory - Peli Case

The peli dividers are tailored to fit into the case, with little cut outs to suit the internal bumps for the wheels, and it makes it very snug fit in the case.

The movable dividers I found to be pretty good with the central one offset from the middle so that the camera body fits in neatly and leaves the 'smaller' half suited to longer lens; IIRC I made no changes to the 'as delivered state.

All in all I can't fault them at all, ceartinaly kept my gear safe and ddin;t et it wander round the case (including a trip to florida as well now).

    Re: Accessory - Peli Case

We use Peli cases at work to supply equipment costing tens of thousands of pounds. They get shipped all over the world and some get used on open decks of ships in all weathers. In 4 years I have yet to see one that has damage other than a few scrape marks; they seem to be indestructible
Too many cameras, too many lenses.......
