OS Map Data to go on-line

Not sure where to post this, OS Map data on-line from next year and I don't really understand whether it will help us as photographers.

From this link The Guardian's take on this it appears that it will be aimed at those users who need a 1/10,000 scale map.

Looks as though we'll still have to buy our Landranger series maps...

This link is to the Communities and Local Government (CLG) Press Release - they are the Govt Dept responsible for Ordnance Survey (OS).

It includes the statement "Mid-scale digital mapping information would also be released in the same way" . Mid Scales in OS terms is 1/50,000 (Landranger), 1/25000 (Explorer) and 1/10000.

It's good news but somewhat at odds with wider government policy which includes the possibility of selling the OS off as a commercial concern. Wait and see perhaps?

As you say, we'll have to wait and see. One thing which I do appreciate in OS maps is the quality of the paper on which they're printed - it's so much better than the flimsy paper I've come across in maps bought in Europe and apparently destined for the same usage! OTOH I don't go for the laminated series of maps - I've got just one and it's overkill for my uses.

I just hope they are more up to date than the ones I've experienced. For business use I purchased about £3,000 worth of digital tiles at 1:1,250 scale together with an update subscription. I know the area very well and when OS stopped updating them a couple of years ago most of the mapping still pre-dated 1964. I had driven myself silly writing to a blank wall at Southampton trying to get value for the several thousands I had subsequently spent on the subscription.

I now check the free Google Earth although, sadly, the area is not on Street View. With up to date information so easily available from aerial photography I can't understand what the OS is doing. I would go to Getmapping if I had my time and money again.
